What should I do if I am involved in an accident?
Stop and identify yourself. Check to make sure everyone is okay, call for help if necessary. Exchange driver's license, registration and insurance information with the driver of the other vehicle; present the same to a police officer if present. If you are injured seek medical attention immediately. Write a description of the accident as soon as possible; take video or pictures of the scene, even if it means having to return later.

Do I need to report the accident?
If the property damage exceeds the minimal dollar amount set by the state in which you reside then you must report the accident to your state's Motor Vehicle Department within the prescribe time limits required by your state, or if death or injury results.

My vehicle is not driveable or not safe to drive, What should I do?
Find a collision repair facility that will repair your vehicle to pre-loss condition. Have your vehicle towed to the facility, and then contact your insurance company and notify them as to where your vehicle will be for inspection. Do not allow your vehicle to be towed to a facility you don't know, and do not authorize repairs by signing a towing release unless it is the facility of your choice.

If asked for a statement from the other driver's insurance company should I comply?
No. Never give a signed statement or make a phone recording with the other insurance company. This could be used against you in court.

Can I take my vehicle to the repair shop of my choice?
In most cases the policyholder retains the right to choose the repair facility. Many insurance companies have developed relationships with specific repair shops; consequently your insurance company may recommend a repair facility. It is your choice, unless your policy specifically states otherwise.

Is it mandatory to go to a drive-in claims service?
No. Unless your policy specifically states otherwise. However, you must report the accident and notify the insurance company as to where it can inspect your vehicle.

Do I need to present more than one estimate?
No. Unless your policy specifically states otherwise.

If I'm not at fault in the accident should I use my policy or try to collect from the other driver?
Try to collect from the other driver's policy. You won't have to pay a deductible and are entitled to a rental car while yours is being repaired. Also, no accident will be charged against your policy.

What option do I have if I disagree with the insurance company on how to repair my vehicle?
If after selecting your own appraiser he/she cannot reach an agreement with the insurance company appraiser on how to repair your vehicle, then the "Appraisal Clause" in your policy can provide a fair way to settle any dispute, by using a third party to review the claim by acting as umpire, their decision on the appraisals will be binding and final as to damages.

I obtained several estimates with a wide range of price differences. Why?
There is a huge difference in collision repair shops and the manner in which they might repair your vehicle. A low estimate could reflect an incomplete job. When some key repairs are not performed such as four-wheel alignment, the result can be disastrous to the occupants and the vehicle. In cases of heavy structural damage, hidden damage that is overlooked or ignored can be another accident waiting to happen.

Who is liable for the safety and quality of the repair? Who guarantees it?
All entities involved have liability to varying degrees depending on the specific situation. The repair may be guaranteed by the collision shop and in many cases by the insurance company.

The insurance adjuster gave me a check for the repairs after inspecting the vehicle. Can I cash it and fix my vehicle later?
No. If you do you might not be able to have hidden damage covered at a later date.
